What to Expect in Counseling: Your Guide to Healing and Growth

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re thinking about counseling—or maybe you’re just curious about what it is. Taking that first step takes courage. I want you to know: you’re not alone, and you don’t have to face it all by yourself.

Counseling is a safe, confidential space where you can explore your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and life experiences with a trained professional. It’s a place to process what’s going on in your inner world—whether it’s anxiety, stress, grief, relationship issues, or simply feeling stuck. Counseling isn’t just about problems; it’s about growth, healing, and learning how to live with more freedom and clarity.

My Approach to Counseling

Every counselor has their own background, personality, and style. When considering a therapist it might be helpful to know where they're coming from. For example, my approach is warm and relational. This is staple for most therapists but is essential to how I approach my sessions. I combine evidence-based practices with deep empathy. I primarily use narrative therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help you uncover the stories you tell yourself—many shaped by past experiences—and gently challenge the beliefs that may be holding you back.

Another distinctive for me - for clients who want to incorporate Christian values into their journey, I also offer faith-based counseling. I draw on biblical principles, spiritual insight, and the redemptive hope that God offers each of us. Whether you come from a faith background or not, my goal is to honor your story and support your personal goals.

What to Expect in Counseling

Your counseling sessions aren’t about quick fixes or judgment. They’re about building trust, creating space for honesty, and helping you reconnect with who you are and who you’re becoming. Together, with your therapist you'll identify patterns, explore meaning, and develop tools you can carry with you outside of your sessions.

Counseling can be challenging—healing often is. But it can also be empowering and freeing. It’s not about having it all together. It’s about showing up, one step at a time, and choosing to move forward.

You’re invited: Whether you’re struggling with something specific or just feeling off, counseling can help. You don’t need to have all the answers or be in crisis. You just need to be willing to begin.

What Happens in a Counseling Session?

Walking into your first session can feel overwhelming. You might be wondering, “What do I say?” or “Will it be awkward?” or “Is this going to help me?” These are all valid questions. The truth is, counseling isn’t a one-size-fits-all experience. But I’d love to give you a glimpse of what to expect.

You Set the Pace

At Rivers Edge we think it's important to share the reigns but we look for you set the pacing. In the first session, we’ll begin by getting to know each other. You’ll have the chance to share what brought you in, what you hope for, and any concerns you have. There’s no pressure to tell your whole life story or dive into anything you're not ready for. You set the pace.

We’ll also go over things like confidentiality, scheduling, and what therapy might look like based on your needs. You’re free to ask questions—this is your space, and I want you to feel as comfortable as possible.

It’s a Conversation—Not an Interrogation

Sessions are more like honest, meaningful conversations. You talk about what’s important to you—whether it’s a specific struggle or something weighing on you emotionally. We’ll listen carefully, reflect back what we hear, and offer insight when helpful.
